Town of Ajax

Town of Ajax was the first municipality in the Region of Durham to implement a Corporate Ban on Single-Use Plastics.

Single-use Plastics (SUP) are plastic items designed and intended to be used and disposed of after a single use or for a short period of use, including but not limited to straws, checkout bags, cutlery, and food containers made from hard-to-recycle materials.Learn more about Ajax’s work to reduce single-use plastics below.

Plan to Ban

In March 2020, Ajax Council approved the Corporate Ban on Single-Use Plastics Implementation Plan and associated actions. The five-phase implementation plan focuses on internal operations and a public awareness campaign to encourage local businesses, community members, and residents to voluntarily reduce their SUPs use and disposal.

The traditional 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) has been expanded to communicate the steps needed to achieve a sustainable, zero-waste lifestyle.

You can help reduce the use of single-use plastics by following the 5Rs:

The first step to waste diversion is to rethink your daily choices. This will eliminate unnecessary purchases, limit necessary purchases, and help you switch to more eco-friendly alternatives.

Mind your Plastics

The Town of Ajax and Mind Your Plastic have partnered together through the Ajax Partnership Fund to create a Plastic Awareness and Reduction Toolkit (PART).

This toolkit was created with both residents and businesses in mind, with the goal to help provide information and resources to reduce plastic and single-use items in event planning.

Municipalities often host a variety of community events throughout the year, such as food festivals and outdoor concerts, which bring thousands of attendees. According to Mind Your Plastic, municipalities produce more than 20,000 tonnes of waste annually during these various events. Mind Your Plastic’s mission is to eliminate plastic pollution in Canada and together, we can tackle unnecessary plastic waste to promote plastic-free land and seas!
